Former Portsmouth and Spurs man in running for League One managerial role

The former Bournemouth and Spurs man spent time with Pompey as he wound down his career - and is now being considered for the Oakwell posting as he makes his way in coaching.

Former Pompey defender Charlie Daniels is under consideration to become the new Barnsley boss.

The News understands the former Blues left-back is a potential option to take on the post vacated by Conor Hourihane at Oakwell.

Hourihane has confirmed he will leave the Tykes at the end of the season, with the search on to find his successor.

And Daniels, who is currently first-team coach with Championship rivals Watford, is seen as someone who can potentially push the side towards third-tier success next season.

Hourihane’s Barnsley exit was confirmed at the end of last week, with Notts County head coach Martin Paterson another man considered for the position, according to reports.

Daniels is making a name for himself as a promising coach since joining Watford’s academy as his playing career came to an end in 2022.

Fratton Park was one of the final stop-offs in a 17-year stint as a professional, making 18 appearances and scoring a single goal over the second half of the 2020-21 campaign.

There was also a stint for the 39-year-old as caretaker boss at Watford earlier this year, after Javi Gracia left the Hornets.

Daniels took the team for two games - a 0-0 draw against Hull City and 1-0 loss at Southampton - before Ed Still was appointed.

The former Spurs and Bournemouth spoke in that period of his desire to move into management, as he expressed he was keen on the Watford role until the end of the season.

He told the BBC: ‘I think any manager (would take this role). The players are very, very good for this level.

‘I've really enjoyed (being in charge of the team). This is what I want to do and where I feel my career is going.

‘It's really good for me to get this opportunity and I'm very grateful. I'm going to enjoy every moment of it.’

Daniels later joined Still’s backroom staff, as his work with the club was recognised by chairman Scott Duxbury.

He said: ‘We are delighted Charlie Daniels has accepted Ed Still’s invitation to be part of his first-team coaching staff, as we are really grateful for the job and work he did in the interim period.

‘He quickly earned the respect of the technical department and the players, and his promotion maintains that link with the academy.’
