Controversial ex-Portsmouth, Charlton Athletic and West Ham man bombed out of League One side as exit nears

Jay Mingi featured 29 times for Pompey during a two year stay.

Life after Fratton Park for former Pompey man Jay Mingi has failed to lift off after his 2023 departure.

John Mousinho’s men were angered by the West Ham youth product and his advisor’s conduct, which subsequently brought a controversial end to his two-year stint at PO4.

Now three-and-a-half-years later, Mingi is in the cold at Stockport County as his once-promising career quickly unravels after a number of unsuccessful loan stays.

Former Pompey man bombed out of League One squad

The versatile operator, who has since been transitioned into a right-back, is currently out of the picture at Edgeley Park , having been bombed out by Jim McNulty following his appointment in June.

The ex-Charlton Athletic man has failed to register a single minute of action in any competition this term and has been left out of the Hatters’ 22-man EFL squad - despite a space still being available.

In fact, Mingi was not handed a squad number for the new campaign in the summer, hinting his future very-much lies away from the League One side.

In August, McNulty revealed Stockport were in discussions to cancel the former Pompey midfielder’s contract, which is heading into its final months.

Speaking at a fans’ forum before the end of the transfer window, the head coach said: ‘Jay has returned to training and played some part in the friendly yesterday.

‘We are engaged in discussions around Jay Mingi leaving Stockport County.’

However, Mingi still remains at Edgeley Park, where he continues to be left in the cold as Stockport mount a promotion push under McNulty.

Since his 2024 arrival, the midfielder-turned-defender has featured just 15 times for the Hatters, with his last competitive outing for the club coming in August 2025.

Mingi arrived at Fratton Park on a free transfer in September 2021 under Danny Cowley.

After featuring three times for the Blues in his maiden campaign, where he also spent time on loan with Maidenhead United, Pompey triggered a 12-month option in his contract the following summer.

He established himself as a regular under Cowley during the first half of the campaign, appearing 26 times in all competitions.

But, a knee injury sustained in January 2023 forced the midfielder to sit out the rest of of the season and never featured under Mousinho following his appointment.

The Blues looked to tie Mingi down to a new long-term deal at the end of the season, only for the versatile operator to reject the fresh terms amid talk of Championship interest.

After his controversial Fratton exit, Mingi would instead drop into League Two that summer, joining Colchester United, who went on to appoint Cowley later in the campaign.

He played 28 times for the U’s that season before signing for Stockport County 12 months later.
