‘One of the biggest talents this country has’: Exciting Brentford verdict on £5m Portsmouth target as Blues close in on capture

Pompey are closing in on a deadline day move for Brentford left-back Jayden Meghoma.

Pompey are signing ‘one of the biggest left-back talents this country has’ in Jayden Meghoma.

That’s the verdict of Thomas Frank, who was full of praise of the highly-rated 20-year-old following his Brentford arrival in 2024.

The Blues are currently without Connor Ogilvie (knee) and Jacob Farrell (groin) due to injury, which has required right-back Zak Swanson to provide cover on the opposite flank.

Sheffield United’ Rhys Norrington-Davies and Liverpool’s Luke Chambers had been touted with a switch earlier this summer, with Meghoma now set to be the man to answer Mousinho’s SOS.

The England youth international rose through the ranks at Spurs before a two-year stay at Southampton, where he registered four first-team outings at St Mary’s.

After a £5m switch to Brentford in 2024, the young talent has registered three outings for the Bees, while also enjoying successful loan stints with Preston North End and most recently Rangers, where he appeared 44 times last term.

With Pompey closing in on his loan capture, former Brentford boss Frank is adamant Meghoma is one of the ‘biggest left-back talents this country has’.

And the Danish coach also highlighted the full-back’s exciting attributes, which could make him stand out at Fratton Park.

Following Meghoma’s switch to the Gtech Community Stadium in 2024, Frank said at the time: ‘I’m very pleased with this signing.

‘Jayden is an England youth international and one of the biggest left-back talents this country has.

‘Again, we had competition from other clubs, so we are definitely doing something right.

‘I like Jayden’s offensive ability - he is quick, has good one-on-one skill and can cross – and he has good defensive ability as well. He is adaptable and can play outside or inside full-back.

‘There is still a lot he can learn, but Jayden is a player we have big belief in. He can help us this season and in the future.’

A new left-back was a priority position for Mousinho heading into the window’s climax.

Meghoma is now set to solve the head coach’s defensive issues and will likely become the 11th new signing of the summer so far.

The Brentford talent will also link up with Gtech Community Stadium team-mate Benjy Arthur, who arrived at Fratton Park last month.

The highly-rated centre-back has impressed during his short stay on the south coast so far, amassing two starts in his opening three matches.

And the Fratton faithful will be hoping Meghoma can replicate the same form as the Blues look to improve on their 18th-placed finish last term.
