Portsmouth monitor midfielder as Stoke City, West Brom and Preston North End join summer chase for Sheffield Wednesday man
Transfer news with a midfielder on Pompey’s shopping list this summer as recruitment plans take shape.
Pompey are keeping tabs on Svante Ingelsson’s situation as they eye summer midfield reinforcements.
The Blues are looking to strengthen their options in central areas, after securing a third successive Championship campaign.
Pompey monitor Ingelsson with midfield summer transfer priority
And a player in the mould of Ingelsson remains firmly on the football operation’s radar, after their January pursuit of the impressive Swedish talent.
But Pompey look set to face some stiff competition from second-tier rivals, with a host of clubs weighing up bids for the 27-year-old as he edges towards a Sheffield Wednesday exit.
The Owls are fighting to keep Ingelsson, despite their relegation to League One amid another campaign beset by off-the-pitch difficulties.
But Stoke City have emerged as serious contenders for Ingelsson’s signature, with West Brom and Preston North End other names in the frame - according to our sister title The Star.
Pompey pushed hard to land the former Udinese and Hansa Rostock man in January with a bid knocked back by Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators, before cooling their interest as the window reached its climax.
With the Blues’ key targets like Ingelsson and Dundee’s Luke Graham remaining with their clubs, the Fratton football operation knew there would likely be the chance to revisit interest this summer.
That remains the case, with Ingelsson’s Hillsborough contract situation a factor in what lies ahead for him in the summer window.
Sheffield Wednesday’s player of the year becomes a free agent on July 1, but his club have a 12-month option they can take up.
That would factor in a drop of wages of between 40 and 50 per cent, however after the Owls’ relegation, though that would be partially offset by an increase written into Ingelsson’s agreement in the event of his option being activated.
Discussions between player and club are ongoing, though, Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen has acknowledged it’s going to be ‘difficult’ to retain the services of one his key figures.
Pompey know the middle of the park requires transfer attention in the months ahead, especially in the face of losing Andre Dozzell this week to MLS side DC United.
Like Dozzell, skipper Marlon Pack also becomes a free agent - though the Buckland boy has confirmed he expects to remain with his hometown club.
Ebou Adams is a front-line option after making a huge impact following his £500,000 capture from Derby County.
South Africa international Luke Le Roux has failed to have the expected impact after his £1m capture from Swedish side IFK Varnamo last year, with fellow £1m man Mark Kosznovszky spending most of his time on the side’s periphery before suffering a serious knee injury in December.
