Portsmouth to weigh up forward options as they plot latest transfer move

But defensive reinforcements remain the Blues’ main concern ahead of their League One opener against Shrewsbury in a week's time.

Kenny Jackett has just two recognised centre-forwards in Ellis Harrison and John Marquis after both Oli Hawkins and Brett Pitman were released earlier this summer.

Pompey have been linked with Brandon Hanlan, although Gillingham boss Steve Evans reckons Jackett's interest has cooled.

The Blues have also been mulling over a move for a forward-thinking midfielder capable of filling the number-10 role.

There are currently three spots available in Pompey's squad because of salary cap restrictions, with keeper Duncan Turnbull expected to go out on loan.

Despite this week’s arrival of left-back Cameron Pring from Bristol City, the Blues still feel they're a couple of bodies light at the back.

Once that is sorted, they'll then turn their attention to what’s required at the top end of the pitch.

Assistant-boss Joe Gallen told The News: ‘We do feel we have very good attacking players. We have Ellis, John, Ryan Williams, Marcus Harness, Ronan Curtis and Reeco Hackett-Fairchild.

‘At the top end of the pitch, we think we have some very good, athletic players who get goals in League One. It's a good, potent attack with some good subs.

‘There is a decision to be made whether we could do with a third number nine or another number 10.

‘In the number-10 role, we've got Andy Cannon, Gareth Evans. Marcus can also do a job in there.

‘Once the defensive positions are sorted out then maybe we can turn our attention to a forward acquisition.’

Jackett needs to decide what sort of striker he'd like to recruit if that is his preference.

Hanlan's someone with rapid pace and has the ability to stretch defences.

But a big target man in the mould of Hawkins would also offer Pompey something different.

‘You can get a number nine who can stretch the opposition and be effective, but sometimes they can't hold the ball up at all.

‘You have to work on the balance of your front three, which we do.

‘Not every player can be running away from the ball and have pace nor can every player be coming towards the ball because that's not a threat either.

‘We have to work out what we need from our number nine to be a potent strike force, really.’
