Roche goal a first in Pompey league history

That was the full extent of the feat achieved by the Morecambe player in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw.

Roche charged upfield to head home Shaun Miller’s left-wing corner in the fourth minute of time added on at the Globe Arena.

In doing so, he created a unique place in Blues history, albeit for the wrong reasons in the eyes of the Fratton faithful.

For the 33-year-old, it was a first goal in 493 appearances during a career that has taken him to Nottingham Forest, Chesterfield and Morecambe.

No Pompey goalkeeper has ever netted for the club since reaching the Football League in August 1920.

Goal-scoring keepers remain a rarity in this country, however.

Ex-Blues keeper Jimmy Glass did, though, famously keep Carlisle in the Football League with a winner with 10 seconds remaining.

He struck against Plymouth in May 1999 to give the Cumbrians a memorable 2-1 triumph.

Glass spent a three-game loan spell at Fratton Park in the 1994-95 campaign.

Asmir Begovic, then with Stoke, scored against Southampton in November 2013.

His goal was a right-footed clearance from his own penalty area and is recorded as the fastest goal by a keeper at 13 seconds.

Finally, Mart Poom scored a 90th-minute equaliser with a diving header for Sunderland in the Premier League in September 2003.

Ironically it came at Derby County – the club he left to join the Black Cats nine months earlier.

Poom made seven appearances during two Pompey seasons.
