Port Solent marina celebrates 30th birthday with free '80s-themed family party

WHEN Princess Anne unveiled a commemorative plaque to officially open Port Solent on July 29, 1988, it meant a vision on an architect's drawing board had finally become a £200m reality.

A Mediterranean-style marina had been created using reclaimed land in the upper reaches of Portsmouth Harbour.

The idea was to provide a waterside lifestyle, where boat owners could moor right outside their homes and have easy access to the Solent and where visitors could enjoy their leisure time by the water's edge.

At the time it was a bold move by landowner Portsmouth City Council. But 30 years on Port Solent remains a thriving marina for sailors and also a popular destination for people who want to dine, shop, work out or watch a movie.
