Youngsters to dance in Prestigious Nutcracker Production

Sophie (11), Maya (15), Emily (9) and Fearne (12) from Portsmouth will be taking to the stage at the Lighthouse, Poole alongside internationally acclaimed professionals in English Youth Ballet’s production of Nutcracker from 13 – 14 November.

The young dancers were selected following highly competitive auditions to join the English Youth Ballet's 100-strong cast for its production at the Lighthouse in Poole.

Training and performing with EYB will give them the opportunity to experience the world of professional ballet at close quarters, working alongside experienced international principal dancers and taking part in intensive rehearsals and coaching.

I spoke to Maya Mouland Rafiq (pictured) who is 15. Maya trains at Marie Clarke School of Dance and goes to The Portsmouth Grammar School.  She said: “I began ballet classes when I was 3. I was always dancing and performing at home, so my Mum enrolled me as soon as I was old enough!  I love being on stage and performing. It's a chance to express myself and I really enjoy the freedom of space and movement. It's like stepping into a different world.  This is my second ballet with EYB, and I truly appreciate the huge opportunity to perform with a professional company and dance with such talented principals. My ballet technique has greatly developed through the classes; even though some are very hard and challenging, I love them! I am also gaining valuable theatre experience with stage entrances, exits, timing and placement, and cannot wait to perform in The Nutcracker with such a talented cast.”

The opportunity has allowed the dancers to see first-hand the commitment required of professional dancers, with demanding rehearsals combining ballet training, choreography, character work and coaching from experienced professionals.

English Youth Ballet Principal Olivia Trevelyan-Richards, who will dance the Sugarplum Fair, said working with young dancers was one of the most rewarding aspects of being part of the company.  “Being part of EYB is an amazing experience for any young dancer,” she said. “I feel privileged to be a principal dancer with the company. I enjoy teaching and coaching all the young dancers and I see some of the most talented young dancers in the country.  I feel honoured to be a role model to the dancers and help give them an insight into the world of professional ballet. Dancing with EYB is an experience that will stay with the young dancers forever.”

Founded in 1998, the English Youth Ballet has built a reputation for giving talented young dancers the opportunity to perform on major regional stages alongside professional principal dancers. Many former EYB performers have gone on to successful careers with leading ballet companies, including The Royal Ballet.
