Portsmouth throw away lead on way to painful Stoke City loss
Stoke came from behind to end Pompey’s six-game Championship unbeaten run.
Second half goals from Jack McGlynn and Ben Wilmot cancelled out Tyrese Shade’s first-half opener at Fratton Park.
It means John Mousinho’s side failed to take the chance to move back into the play-off places ahead of this afternoon’s fixtures, while Stoke equalled a 79-year club record with their fifth successive away win.
Pompey were excellent in the first half and should perhaps have gone in at the break with more than a one-goal lead.
The Potters made them pay after the interval, as the Blues signed off for the international break in frustrating fashion.
Nico Schmid’s role in the defeat will be under the spotlight, making a mess of Ben Johnson’s cross for the first and only being able to push Ethan Galbraith’s stinging drive to Wilmot for the second.
Pompey’s form and confidence saw them start on the front foot and go on to produce some of their best football of the season in the first half.
The goal arrived in the sixth minute after an excellent short-corner routine freed Devlin. The Northern Ireland was denied by Junior Tchamadeu as he pulled the trigger, but Shade was lurking and slammed the ball home - celebrating with a Lualua-esque somersault.
Ebou Adams then picked up his fifth yellow of the season, meaning he will serve a one-game ban at Bolton Wanderers after the international break.
Marlon Pack drove a 25 yarder narrowly over 11 minutes before the break, after Adrian Segecic’s perseverance.
Pompey were given a warm ovation at the interval in recognition of their efforts.
The home side’s pressure continued after the restart, without creating a clearcut opportunity.
But all their hard work was undone by Schmid’s error in the 59th minute, as he spilled Ben Johnson’s cross, Luca Bombino recovered the ball from the byline and McGlynn fired home.
It got worse for Pompey with 13 minutes left as a Stoke free-kick dropped to Galbraith, whose stinging low drive was parried by Schmid with Wilmot reacting quickest and nodding home.
Josh Murphy and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen were then thrown on as Pompey sought a way back into the game.
But the Blues were unable to create a clear opening or find a way through across the five minutes of stoppage time.
