Highly-rated New Japan Pro-Wrestling star Shota Umino is last man standing in 40-strong Revolution Rumble

Shota Umino stood up to the challenge to be crowned champion in the biggest ever Revolution Rumble event.

The New Japan Pro-Wrestling star was the last man standing in the 40-strong main billingat the Mountbatten Centre on Saturday.

Highly-rated Umino, 22, was the final competitor to enter the ring and was the only wrestler not to be hoist over the ropes.

The Japanese fighter’s success was made all the more impressive given the fact he entered the Revolution Rumble nursing a shoulder injury.

But Umino, who is based at the Portsmouth School of Wrestling during a year long stay in England, came through the pain barrier to take the title.

The Asian wrestler is tipped for big things in the future and this will have done his reputation no harm.

Portsmouth School of Wrestling coach Andy Simmonz felt the biggest ever Revolution Rumble was the ideal way to cap a ‘fantastic’ evening of action.

‘Shota was the last man standing in the Revolution Rumble,’ said Simmonz.

‘He’s a Japanese wrestler from New Japan Pro Wrestling.

‘Shota is going to be in the UK for about a year.

‘He’s been training with us at the Portsmouth School of Wrestling and is wrestling all over the country.

‘He’s based out of Portsmouth at the moment.

‘Shota came into it with an injury as well, but he managed to fight through the pain and win the Rumble.

‘If you’re a die-hard wrestling fan you’ll probably know who he is.

‘Shona is one that is tipped for the top in five years time.’

Elsewhere on the evening, Simmonz teamed up with Ashley Kay and Hikuleo to defeat Harry Milligan, Dan Randall and Zan Phoenix in a 3 v 3 tag team match.

In singles fights, Sam Powell beat Rob the Gob in a grudge match, Benjamin Black battled to victory over Belov while New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s Great-O-Kharn was victorious over Mad Kurt.

Dirty Dave Dennis’ night did not go to plan as he was shaved bald in front of the watching audience following his defeat to Priscilla in a loser-must-shave-their-hair match.
