Portsmouth boss delivers Nico Schmid verdict after costly Stoke City errors from keeper

John Mousinho believes mistakes across the board cost Pompey against Stoke City with Nico Schmid under the spotlight for his errors.

And the frustrated Blue boss feels his team have only themselves to blame for throwing away their lead against the Potters, after an excellent first-half display at Fratton Park.

Pompey could and should have been more than a goal to the good at the break, after a dominant 45-minute showing, with Tyrese Shade’s finish the difference.

Schmid then spilled Ben Johnson’s ball in for Jack McGlynn’s leveller, before parrying Ethan Galbraith’s drive to Ben Wilmot for the visitor’s winner.

Mousinho acknowledged Schmid will be ‘disappointed’ with his role in the goals, but saw multiple errors from his side in the key moments.

He said: ‘I’m sure Nico will be disappointed.

‘My take though is there were the game was littered with technical errors through the side.

‘The tempo was set with the first thing we did from kick-off when we played the ball back to Nico and didn’t block the number nine.

‘We’d had a warning, so Bozenik goes early, we let him have a free run at Nico and he has to put it on his left foot and go longer.

‘We then fouled Luke Graham and that set the tone for the second half.

‘All of those small errors accumulate and accumulate - and ultimately we didn’t do enough to get ourselves out of it.

‘Number one, don’t give the free-kick away. It’s a really poor free-kick to give away.

‘Number two, Galbraith has the shot and could Nico parry it better? I’ll have a look at that. Then number three follow your man in.

‘If you compound errors you end up losing.’

Mousinho recognised Pompey’s quality in the first half, but was angered by the manner in which their performance after the restart failed to replicate those efforts.

He added: ‘The contrast in the two halves was what cost us.

‘We got what we deserved for the way we started the second half. That’s even more baffling given how good we were in the first half, how we performed and how we got the detail right.’
