Portsmouth unbeaten run continues with hard-earned Burnley draw

Pompey grafted to a hard-earned point at Burnley to stretch their Championship unbeaten run to five games.

John Mousinho’s men had to withstand long spells of pressure at Turf Moor to get their return in the 0-0 draw.

But Pompey looked what appeared to be a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out in the first half, as Marlon Pack’s effort was chalked off.

It will be the Clarets who feel they deserved a greater reward, however, as they failed to end their record-breaking run without a home league win in new boss’ Fabio Celestini’s first game in charge.

Burnley came out of the blocks quickly, with Marcus Edwards' shot from a tight angle blocked by Madiodio Dia.

Adrian Segecic’s drive was deflected wide after his free-kick was hit into the wall.

Nico Schmid was then alert to leave his box and deny the on-rushing Jamie Vardy.

Pompey had a goal harshly ruled out in the 13th minute as Gregoire Coudert’s punch was volleyed into the unguarded net by Marlon Pack, but Ryan Kavuma-McQueen was adjudged to have fouled the keeper to angry Pompey protests.

Andrea Hountondji headed over before Kyle Walker’s 20 yarder was tipped over by Schmid. There was an incredible miss from Edwards from the resulting corner, as he fired over from a yard out at the back post.

Hountondji fired at Schmid 15 minutes before the break, but a penalty appeal was ignored by referee Ruebyn Ricardo as Mohamed and Walker tangled in the box.

Edwards’ 20 yarder was deflected for a corner eight minutes before the break, before Ramazani fired into the net moments later but the flag was up for offside.

Ebou Adams was introduced for the ineffective Segecic at the break, with Tyrese Shade on for Kavuma-McQueen five minutes after the restart.

The pattern of the home side pushing continued, however, though there wasn’t many clear openings arriving.

Schmid gifted the ball to Largie Ramazani with 21 minutes left but Pack made a key block.

Josh Murphy was thrown on for Marko Milovanovic with 20 minutes left, with Shade going up front. Thomas Waddingham followed in place of Kamara.

That saw Pompey offer more attacking threat than they previously had produced, without being able to fashion a clear opening.

They managed to see the game out through three minutes of stoppage time, however, to collect a draw which was appreciated by the 1,456 travelling fans.
